Chinese critic Shi Hantao, curator of the exhibition, commented on Thijs’ images that they inherit a surrealistic spirit. “The fruits, vegetables, vases or small animals, which are very beautiful in shape and color, are suddenly pushed into a marvelous situation, such as a fairy tale, giving the viewer both visual and spiritual pleasure. Shi compared Thijs’ photographs with still-life paintings from the Northern Renaissance, noting that both have “a quiet and mysterious power, which is conceived and transcends in everyday life.”
