White Unicorn
These portraits reveal the majestic and even mythical properties of horses, even going so far as to create a black and white unicorn using an antique narwhal tooth. Marie Cecile Thijs has also portrayed Salinero, an Olympic gold medal winning dressage horse. Salinero is included in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
White Unicorn by Marie Cécile Thijs will be part of the upcoming exhibition in Museum Barberini Potsdam, titled “Unicorn: The Mythical Beast in Art” (as of October 25, 2025 till February 1, 2026). The range of exhibits covers a period from the second millennium BC to the present day and includes paintings and prints as well as sculptures, manuscripts, tapestries and art chamber objects. On display are works by artists such as Arnold Böcklin, Albrecht Dürer, Angela Hampel, Gustave Moreau, Joachim Sandrart and Marie Cecile Thijs.
